Chamber of Commerce CEO: Trump’s conduct last week ‘absolutely unacceptable’

U.S. Chamber of Commerce CEO Thomas Donohue on Tuesday said that President Trump’s conduct last week was unacceptable and inexcusable, commenting on the violent riot at the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob. 

“By his words and actions, he has undermined our democratic institutions and ideals,” Donohue said in a press conference. 

He said he trusts Vice President Pence, Trump’s Cabinet, and Congress to decide what to do in response. Republican lawmakers attempted to challenge the results of Arizona and Pennsylvania, two swing states Biden won, during and after the violent and deadly attack on the Capitol.

“It is for the vice president, the Cabinet, and Congress to decide whether or not to invoke the 25th Amendment or pursue impeachment or other measures—and we trust them to use those tools judiciously, if needed, to ensure our nation’s well-being and security,” he said.

Donohue did not call the riot a “coup” when asked how he would describe it.

“I would say there were some efforts to achieve other objectives, I’m not sure it was a full coup, but we don’t like them, and we have responded to them as have all Americans—not all—but most”
