Trudeau: Canadian intel has heard recordings of Khashoggi killing

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday that Canada’s intelligence agencies have heard the Turkish recordings related to the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

“Yes,” Trudeau said Monday at a news conference when asked if Canadian intelligence officials had heard the audio, according to NBC News.

{mosads}”Canada’s intelligence agencies have been working very closely on this issue with Turkish intelligence, Canada has been fully briefed on what Turkey had to share,” he added.

Trudeau’s comments come after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday that Turkey had given recordings related to Khashoggi’s death to the United States, Saudi Arabia, Germany, France and the United Kingdom.

Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi kingdom and a columnist for The Washington Post, was killed after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2.

Erdogan has previously said that orders to murder Khashoggi “came from the highest levels of the Saudi government.”

A number of U.S. lawmakers and members of the international community have said they believe Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was likely aware of the plan to kill Khashoggi before the suspected murder occurred.

Saudi Arabia has put forth changing accounts of the events surrounding Khashoggi’s death after first denying knowledge of his whereabouts when he was missing for weeks. When first acknowledging Khashoggi’s death, the kingdom said he died during a brawl. A Saudi official later said, however, that the killing of Khashoggi was “premeditated.”
