RNC ‘live tweets’ Cantor conference call, Whip slams Biden remarks
This morning, the Republican National Committee announced it would “live tweet” a conference call with House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (Va.) regarding the stimulus.
The RNC’s official Twitter feed sent several tweets during the call. Cantor highlighted Vice President Joe Biden’s remarks that the Obama administration had misread the economy:
Rep Cantor points to VP’s comments over weekend about “misreading economy” Rep Cantor: They miswrote the stimulus. got it wrong #RNC
Biden said that “We misread how bad the economy was, but we are now only about 120 days into the recovery package…The truth of the matter was… no one expected that that recovery package would in fact be in a position at this point of having to distribute the bulk of money.”
The Vice President, who is known for his outspokenness, made remarks that clashed with the Obama administration’s official position on the economy.
The RNC and Cantor did not miss the opportunity to pounce on them, scheduling a conference call on the economy in the midst of President Obama’s visit to Russia and during debate over healthcare reform in Congress.
The second-ranking House Republican instead called on Congress to focus on the economy in the coming months:
Rep Cantor: Priority of Congress should be economy over next couple months #RNC
Before the recess, the House passed a landmark climate change bill. In the coming weeks, the Senate may introduce healthcare reform legislation. At the end of the call, Cantor also criticized President Obama for having an agenda that’s too ambitious:
Rep Cantor: No question this Administration has been trying to do too much too soon, our priority should be the economy #RNC
Cantor claimed that the stimulus had killed jobs and said he would favor re-appropriating money from the first stimulus to other areas of the economy:
Rep Cantor: I handed the President a plan for a real stimulus, all we have seen is job loss
Rep Cantor says he would be in favor of redirecting some of the authorized money from the first stimulus #RNC
