Marines ban social networking sites in response to Pentagon report

The Marine Corps have banned its troops from using Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites after a Pentagon office issued a report that the sites could pose a security risk to the military.

The AP reported this morning that the Marines issued the ban unilaterally on Monday while it is still under review for the rest of the military. The ban only applies to social networking usage on Marine computers, not the personal devices of the troops.

Twitter Room wrote on Monday that the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs Price Floyd had tamped down rumors of a department-wide ban of the sites.

Floyd himself uses Twitter as does Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Michael Mullen.
