Virginia gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds (D) went on the attack against his opponent Bob McDonell (R) on Monday. Deed’s campaign used a newly created Twitter account to accuse McDonnell of draining the state’s education fund.
Deeds rarely, if ever, uses Twitter to directly address McDonnell. The move suggests that the Deeds campaign may increase attacks on McDonnell as Election Day approaches in the fall.
The new account, entitled @DeedsCountry, is intended to track the state senator’s week-long tour of southern and southwestern Virginia. It tweeted:
Hey @bobmcdonnell why does your transportation plan drain at least $5.41 billion from education (your own estimate)???
Deeds has consistently touted his education plan during the campaign. The commonwealth, however, faces a difficult budget situation.
Deeds trails McDonnell, who formerly served as Virginia Attorney General, by 15 points in a recent poll. The margin represents McDonnell’s biggest lead to date.
