Former Gov. Thomas Kean (R) will join New Jersey GOP gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie at a campaign event on education on Tuesday.
Chrisite, who is looking to bolster his moderate Republican credentials, used Twitter to publicize the centrist Kean’s appearance and to solicit questions from his followers.
The Republican nominee tweeted Monday:
will be holding a Higher Ed Student Forum with Kim and Gov. Kean tomorrow – taking Q’s about higher ed in NJ from Twitter! use #educateNJ
NJ college students, do you have a question on how Christie Admin. will make higher education better? RT your question using #educateNJ
Kean served as New Jersey governor from 1982 to 1990 and enjoyed wide popularity among his state’s voters. President George W. Bush also appointed the former governor to serve on the 9/11 Commission in 2002.
New Jersey was once a friendly place for centrist Republicans such as Kean and former Gov. Christine Todd Whitman. The state, however, had trended strongly Democratic in recent years.
Christie has a chance to break the trend; the former U.S. Attorney currently enjoys a significant lead over incumbent Gov. Jon Corzine (D) in the polls.
