Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich traveled to Milwaukee today to throw his support behind Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott Walker.
Gingrich tweeted:
In milwaukee for a reception for scott walker who is the very competent milwaukee leader who is running for governor
Walker, who currently serves as Milwaukee County executive, could face a formidable field of opponents in the GOP primary. Gingrich’s choice is interesting considering former Rep. Mark Neumann, a member of Gingrich’s 1994 “Republican Revolution,” is also pondering a run.
A recent poll conducted by Public Policy Polling showed incumbent Gov. Jim Doyle (D) trailing Walker by eight points and Neumann by one point. Doyle is likely to run for a third term.
Other GOP candidates rumored to be interested in the race are businessman Mark Todd and former Gov. Tommy Thompson. Thompson also served as Health and Human Services Secretary under President George W. Bush.
Gingrich appeared at a high-profile fundraiser for Walker this afternoon, according to The Capital News (Madison, WI).
