Columbian President Juan Uribe is visiting the White house today, and Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) has a message for him.
She tweeted:
Colombia’s Pres. Uribe in DC. Has made + changes in his country: economic, hemispheric stability, safety of its citizens. Let’s pass FTA.
Lehtinen showed strong support for passing the Columbian free trade agreement (FTA), which President Bush and most Republicans have backed for some time. Supporters of the FTA cite internal improvements in Columbia in backing the agreement.
Some Democrats, however, are skeptical of the agreement. They say improvements in Columbia are overstated and that the pact will cause greater unemployment in America. The Obama administration has not yet made a strong statement on the agreement, but administration officials opposed its inclusion in last year’s stimulus package.
