McCain: with healthcare ‘it’s the cost’ that counts

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) threw his hat into the debate over healthcare reform today, saying the major problem with any reform would be the cost of the proposal.

He tweeted today:

It’s not the quality of health care it’s the cost – wellness and fitness!

McCain appeared at a healthcare conference today in Houston alongside Senate Minority leader Mitch McConell (R-Ky.) and Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.). McCain tweeted about his appearance earlier today.

During his presidential run last year, McCain promoted his own healthcare proposal. His plan included used tax credits offered to individuals and families to purchase individual insurance plans. To pay for it, McCain planned to do away with tax breaks on employer-provided insurance.

At the time, President Barack Obama harshly criticized McCain’s plan, saying that it would tax health benefits for the first time in history.

Now, however, President Obama and congressional Democrats have not ruled out taxing health benefits to fund their healthcare reform package.
