Obama Extends D.C. Opportunity Scholarships — For a While
The Washington Post is reporting that President Obama has decided to extend D.C. Opportunity Scholarships for those currently enrolled in the program.
As we’ve discussed before, these scholarships provide funding for approximately 1,700 District of Columbia students to afford private school. Two of those students attend Sidwell Friends school with the Obamas’ daughters.
By extending the program for current enrollees, the administration essentially concedes that the program is successful. This is an important first step, one for which conservatives, at least partially, should give credit to the Obama administration.
I’m not holding my breath for Obama to take on teachers unions opposed to any kind of reform or increased standards by keeping the program in place permanently, but for those 1,700 students from low-income families, the hope for a quality education can continue.
