Pakistan

What is this we’re hearing about Pakistan? One can unequivocally say that this is a nuclear power very close to anarchy. Are you really surprised? Ever since Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf imposed emergency rule, there have been angry response from thousands of Pakistani citizens protesting politicians being ousted from office, journalists and businessmen wantonly arrested, and censorship of TV and print media.

The United States is really in a quandary for two reasons: 1) Pakistan is a nuclear power and 2) the Bush administration has supported Pakistan because it borders Afghanistan and is very important in our fight against the Taliban and al Qaeda, and since no one really knows al Qaeda’s reach and capabilities anymore, we can only speculate until the next attack succeeds or fails. However, the administration is willing to shack up with Musharraf at all costs, moral, political and economic — you name it. And they’re willing to compromise it all. Along the way they have disregarded and undermined our Constitution and its rule of law. Our government has done this consistently over the past several decades, acting blindly for short-lived political expediency, and now the chickens have gone full circle and are coming home to roost.

Now Musharraf is totally ignoring the administration that has subsidized him for the last several years, and now “Baby Boy” doesn’t want to listen to “Daddy Big Bucks” anymore. Can we now believe that Musharraf was pimping us all along, and we were too much of a willing suitor to face the reality of this situation? The old adage remains true: “There is no such thing as permanent friends, only permanent interests.” Wake up, America. Today it’s Pakistan; who will it be tomorrow?
