Can We Force Politicians to Take the Hippocratic Oath?

First, do no harm. Doctors take the Hippocratic Oath. Perhaps it’s time we require the same from our elected officials.

The rhetoric is alarming, but not the scariest part. President Obama says we must act immediately to prevent “catastrophe.” Rep. David Obey (D) of Wisconsin said, “This economy is in mortal danger of absolute collapse.” Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) actually uttered the word “Armageddon.”

If Obama and congressional Democrats are losing their grip on resolving the economic crisis, then perhaps they should step aside and just do nothing. First, do no harm. The hyperbole, the Chicken Little wild-eyed panic, the uncertainty — all wrapped around a childish partisan stubbornness in refusing to work with Republicans (yes, I’m looking at you, Speaker Pelosi) and sticking to pork and social engineering, when, according to them, Rome is burning down all around them.

I would rather we fail by letting the situation correct itself over time, even if we all suffer, than to have politicians who are increasingly sounding less and less qualified to deal with the crisis trip over each other in panic, only to have us all suffer more grandly as they take enormous actions they have no confidence in.
