Kaine battled Pence in debate — snooze

I’m sorry. I don’t care.

I admit it is wrong, closed-minded, irresponsible, insulting and, as a professor of media, professionally just a no-no.

But really I don’t.

So when the two vice presidential candidates walked across the stage, I was not watching. Not paying attention. At all. Not even curious. Perhaps it might hit my newsfeed, or merit a Facebook hit, perhaps if there is something really of note, I might even YouTube it. But probably not.

And this is so wrong for some many reasons. Not the least because this is what our political conversation should be today. Two serious men with strong beliefs and different views, with honorable political track records (even if you do not agree with their positions) presumably discussing significant issues of the moment.

But then again they don’t matter. Not in the slightest. They are the sideshow. And who cares about the sideshow when you have the main event happening every hour on Twitter (especially at 3 a.m.)?

Not when Wikileaks founder Julian Assange can play P.T. Barnum as good as Donald Trump.

So sorry TIm Kaine and Mike Pence, I don’t care. Nothing personal.

Even those who are trying to promote this as a proxy-battle of the heavyweights, talking about how they are going to attack and raise issues, aren’t even taking it that seriously. As of 3 p.m., on the eve of the battle CNN.com could barely fit it onto their list of most important stories.

And actually the thought of a thoughtful debate seems also boring after the made-for-SNL first debate and sewer-dwelling tone of the whole election.

Oh and here is another reason I don’t care. Because it doesn’t matter.

No matter what is said tonight, it will be forgotten before the digital ink dries. Is there really anything they can say that one side or the other has not said? Trump’s taxes? Paid, unpaid or deducted? Benghazi, the foundations, the speeches? Snore.

The only possible fun will be watching the man of straight morals and upright fortitude if Pence is given direction to go after the transgressions that have defined Bill and Hillary’s public marriage. Now that will be squirming worth watching.

But I might be wrong. This might matter. This might be important.

Sorry I still don’t care.
