JoJo Siwa performs as part of first same-sex couple on ‘DWTS’
JoJo Siwa made her “Dancing with the Stars” debut alongside a female partner, marking the first time a same-sex couple has competed together on the show.
The Nickelodeon star took to the dance floor with Jenna Johnson for a quickstep on the ABC competition series on Monday.
“For the first time in ‘Dancing with the Stars’ history, I am dancing with another female, and I’m really, really proud,” the 18-year-old social media sensation, who came out as a member of the LGBTQ community in January, told viewers ahead of her performance.
“What I love to do is make truly being who you are easier for kids,” Siwa said.
In perhaps a tongue-in-cheek nod to the move, the pair performed to the 2003 Jet song “Are You Gonna be my Girl.”
“We’re going to be inspiring for people who come after us,” Siwa told Johnson on “DWTS.”
“What better way to go into season 30 of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ than by making history?” exclaimed Johnson, the ballroom dance show’s season 26 champion.
Siwa, a “Dance Moms” alum, topped the leaderboard following her performance, scoring the most points against other celebrity contestants including Olympic gymnast Suni Lee, singer Melanie C., Olivia Jade and Brian Austin Green, among others.
After Siwa’s quick-step, judge Bruno Tonioli called it the “groundbreaking moment we’ve all been waiting for.”
