Jill Biden teaming with ‘Sesame Street’ to help military families discuss race with children
First lady Jill Biden is partnering with “Sesame Street” and the United Services Automobile Association (USAA) to help military families discuss race with their children.
In a joint statement, “Sesame Street” and the USAA shared their joint partnership by releasing a new collection of resources for military families on the discussion of race and diversity.
These new resources will be a part of “Sesame Street’s” Coming Together initiative for racial literacy.
The new initiative also debuted a video of Biden and “Sesame Street” character Rosita talking about the importance of supporting military families.
“I was just thinking of all the things that make me proud to be me — it’s a little project I’m doing with my military-kid friends,” Rosita tells Biden in the video.
“Military and veteran families practice service in everything they do, and they live their lives with purpose — values that help them confront injustices like racism,” said Jeanette Betancourt, Sesame Workshop’s senior vice president of U.S. social impact.
“In a military kid’s world, it’s common to see people of all races and backgrounds living, working, and playing together. Military parents and caregivers can help their children become good citizens of the world by using that unique opportunity to talk openly about racism and celebrate who they are inside and out.”
Biden joins other former first ladies such as Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama who have appeared on the long-running daytime television program.
“Sesame Street,” which began airing in 1969, recently produced an episode that featured the marriage of a same-sex couple who are now recurring characters on their show, USA Today reported.
