Michael Jordan donating $2M in ‘Last Dance’ proceeds to Feeding America, food banks

Legendary NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan is donating proceeds from the hit documentary miniseries, “The Last Dance,” to Feeding America and food banks this holiday season.

In a tweet on Wednesday, Feeding America said the former Chicago Bull star is donating $2 million to help its “neighbors facing hunger.” The nonprofit organization called the donation “an incredible gift to be thankful for” ahead of Thanksgiving.

“In these challenging times and in a year of unimaginable difficulty due to COVID-19, it’s more important than ever to pause and give thanks,” Jordan said in a statement provided by the organization on Twitter. 

“I am proud to be donating additional proceeds from The Last Dance to Feeding America and its member food banks in the Carolinas and Chicago to help feed America’s hungry,” added Jordan, who is the owner of the Charlotte Hornets and was raised in North Carolina.

The donation, which comes as many remain unemployed during the pandemic, is just the most recent act of philanthropy in 2020 from the former NBA star.

Earlier this year, he announced that he and the Jordan brand were donating $100 million over the next decade to organizations committed to “ensuring racial equality, social justice and greater access to education.” 

“Black lives matter. This isn’t a controversial statement,” he and his brand said in a statement at the time, which came days after the police killing of George Floyd. “Until the ingrained racism that allows our country’s institutions to fail is completely eradicated, we will remain committed to protecting and improving the lives of Black people.”

Jordan had also condemned the killing shortly before announcing the donation and said his “heart goes out to the family of George Floyd and to the countless others whose lives have been brutally and senselessly taken through acts of racism and injustice.”

About a month later, Jordan and his brand drew widespread attention again after reports emerged of their plans to donate $2.5 million to groups committed to fighting Black voter suppression.

And last month, Jordan also opened a medical clinic in Charlotte in an effort to provide those uninsured with treatment amid the ongoing pandemic. The clinic was the second Jordan opened in less than a year.
