Whitmer thanks Rihanna, Jack Dorsey for helping Flint and Detroit food banks

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) thanked Rihanna and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey on Monday after their charitable foundations made donations to food banks and other charities in Detroit and Flint amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Whitmer thanked “Rihanna…yes, that Rihanna” during Monday’s press conference on the state’s efforts to prevent the spread of the virus.

“I personally want to thank Rihanna…yes, that Rihanna…and her Clara Lionel Foundation and Jack Dorsey’s Start Small Fund for stepping up to help groups in Detroit and Flint on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Whitmer said. “This generous gift will give these essential nonprofits much needed resources to help address the needs of those impacted most by COVID-19.”

The singer’s Clara Lionel Foundation, along with Dorsey’s #startsmall initiative and a host of other foundations donated $3.2 million to need-based organizations in the two cities, according to celebrity giving news site Look To The Stars.

The donation will benefit the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, Catholic Charities, Community Foundation of Greater Flint, and a number of other local charity organizations, according to the website.
