Tina Fey defends Michelle Wolf remarks: She ‘did her job’

Tina Fey defended Michelle Wolf, whose controversial remarks at the White House correspondents’ dinner Saturday prompted a whirlwind of criticism over the weekend.

“Michelle did her job,” Fey said during an interview with “Today” show hosts Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb on Thursday. “You can’t ask a coyote to guard the henhouse, and if you invite a comedian into that place where that tone is set, they’re going to give it to you straight. That’s pretty much what she did.”

The “Saturday Night Live” alum also said that she was thrilled to have never hosted the event herself.

“It’s the roughest room,” Fey continued, adding that any comedian who does take the gig needs to have an “I don’t care what you think about this” mindset when it comes to the audience.

Fey also said, despite the commotion Wolf’s routine drew from all corners, that the comedian’s tone didn’t break too far from the norm.

“It really ties into this thing, this culture of people being like, ‘I said it!'” Fey said. “That’s the culture we’ve built now.”
