Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) says he’s “not mad” at Larry David after the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” creator poked fun at a Georgia law during the show’s final season.

At the start of the season, David’s character is arrested for handing out a bottle of water to a voter in line, making him a cause célèbre among liberals.

During an interview with Dan Abrams on NewsNation on Monday, Raffensperger boasted that the state’s Election Integrity Act has succeeded in reducing wait times at polling places. He added the law is not being enforced as strictly as the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” plot implies.

“What we said is you can’t do any politicking, electioneering. But … poll workers, they can hand out all the water they want,” Raffensperger said.

The secretary of state previously penned a letter to David, in which Raffensperger congratulated the comedian “on becoming the first, and to our knowledge, the only person arrested for distributing water bottles to voters within 150 feet of a polling station.”

Raffensperger told Abrams he was taking the satire in stride.

“We’re having some fun with this,” he said. “I think Larry David probably fell out of his chair when he got that letter from me. ‘Wow, a Republican with a sense of humor, must be a unicorn.’”

The Georgia law states that no person shall “offer to give, or participate in the giving of any money or gifts, including, but not limited to, food and drink” within 150 feet of a polling place.

Raffensperger noted Georgia was also making efforts to encourage early voting, and had set records for early turnout in the 2022 midterm election.
