SNL’s George Santos bids farewell to Congress through musical number in cold open

The latest episode of “Saturday Night Live” poked fun at former Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) for being expelled from Congress on Friday with a mock press conference and a musical number.

The cold open begins with Sarah Sherman playing CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, who announced that there is a breaking news press conference coming from the Capitol. The scene cuts to Bowen Yang playing Santos, who called a press conference shortly after the expulsion vote.

“This entire country has been bullying me just because I am a proud gay thief,” Yang said.

Yang is referencing the House Ethics Committee’s findings into Santos last month, which discovered that Santos “blatantly stole from his campaign” and “deceived donors into providing what they thought were contributions to his campaign but were, in fact, payments for his personal benefit.” Santos has also pleaded not guilty to 23 criminal counts on allegations that he misled donors, unlawfully received unemployment benefits and charged his donors’ credit cards without authorization.

The House voted to expel Santos in a 311-114-2 vote on Friday.

When calling on reporters, the fake Santos demands that they give him their bank routing numbers, mother’s maiden name and childhood pet name.

When asked how he felt about the House’s move to kick him out, he emphasized that he doesn’t need Congress anyway.

“To hell with Congress, I don’t need them anyway. Because my new movie opened this weekend, it’s called ‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce.’”

At one point, the impersonated Santos compares himself to the late Princess Diana and actress Marilyn Monroe before he announces that he would like to sing a “tribute” to himself. The scene then cuts to Yang at the piano, singing a parody of “Candle in the Wind.”

“It seems to me like I’ve lived my life like a scandal in the wind / Never knowing who to cling to when the law closed in,” Yang sings.

“It seems to me like I’ve lived my life like an evil Forrest Gump / I’m the guy who lied even too much for Donald Trump,” Yang continues.
