Karine Jean-Pierre profiled in Vogue, details Biden asking her to become press secretary

Karine Jean-Pierre is getting her own spread in the pages of Vogue.

The White House press secretary is profiled in the October issue of the fashion magazine, released Thursday and on newsstands Sep. 19.

In the piece, Jean-Pierre — the first Black woman and openly gay person to hold the role — recalled when President Biden asked her in 2022 to take on the job behind the White House Briefing Room podium.

“It happened fast,” Jean-Pierre said of the conversation. “The president and I had 20 seconds together.” 

“You’re kind of like, ‘Were there supposed to be fireworks happening? Mood music?’” Jean-Pierre told Vogue. “There was none of that.” 

Jean-Pierre, 49, also opened up about managing work and caring for her 9-year-old daughter. Jean-Pierre and her longtime partner, former CNN correspondent Suzanne Malveaux, separated, according to the magazine.

“I’m a single mom who is co-parenting this amazing kid,” Jean-Pierre said. “Our number-one priority is her privacy and to make sure we create an environment that’s nurturing.”

First lady Jill Biden praised Jean-Pierre in the profile by writer Mattie Kahn, calling her a “pioneering White House press secretary” who “brings grace, integrity, and insight to the podium.” The first lady said Jean-Pierre possesses a “calm, quiet confidence” that “inspires us all.”

Appearing in one photo in Vogue in her office while sporting a colorful Victor Glemaud dress and in another snapshot sporting a bright red Gabriela Hearst suit while clutching her famed thick binder of notes, Jean-Pierre — who shuns coffee and alcohol — received some words of advice from her predecessor in a written note before she took the job.

“Keep your feet planted on the ground and your spine stiff,” former Biden press secretary Jen Psaki wrote to Jean-Pierre.
