Biden commemorates Jimmy Buffett as ‘American music icon who inspired generations’
President Biden issues a statement celebrating Jimmy Buffett as “an American music icon who inspired generations” after the famous musician died Friday evening.
“A poet of paradise, Jimmy Buffett was an American music icon who inspired generations to step back and find the joy in life and in one another,” Biden’s statement reads. “His witty, wistful songs celebrate a uniquely American cast of characters and seaside folkways, weaving together an unforgettable musical mix of country, folk, rock, pop, and calypso into something uniquely his own.”
“We had the honor to meet and get to know Jimmy over the years, and he was in life as he was performing on stage – full of goodwill and joy, using his gift to bring people together,” he added.
Buffett, the writer of hits such as “Margaritaville,” died Friday at the age of 76, according to his official social media accounts and website.
“He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many,” the statement reads.
Biden wasn’t the only former president to pay respects. Former President Bill Clinton also paid tribute to the music icon.
“Jimmy Buffett’s music brought happiness to millions of people,” the former president wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I’ll always be grateful for his kindness, generosity, and great performances through the years, including at the White House in 2000.”
“My thoughts are with his family, friends, and legion of devoted fans,” Clinton added.
Former first lady Hillary Clinton, also the former secretary of state and 2016 presidential candidate, added: “Fair winds and following seas, dear Jimmy.”
