President Trump told Kim Kardashian West in a meeting at the White House that she and rapper Kanye West were improving his popularity among black voters, according to Bloomberg.
Kardashian West met with Trump last week to discuss prison reform, but Bloomberg reported that Trump was also focused on discussing his approval among African-Americans. The president said the couple was instrumental in his approval rising among that demographic.
{mosads}In late April, West praised Trump on Twitter and said that the two both had “dragon energy.” It was praise that Trump later publicly credited for a big increase in his approval among black men in a Reuters weekly tracking poll.
“Kanye West must have some power because you probably saw I doubled my African-American poll numbers. We went from 11 to 22 in one week,” Trump said in early May at the National Rifle Association’s annual conference.
The polling data from Reuters he referenced found that black men’s approval of Trump rose to 22 percent for the week ending on April 29. It was reported to be 11 percent just a week before. But the poll shows that support for Trump had doubled among African-American men, not the entire population, as Trump claimed.
Kardashian West visited Trump and White House adviser Jared Kushner to discuss prison reform and to campaign for the pardon of Alice Marie Johnson, a 65-year-old woman who is serving a life sentence in prison for a nonviolent drug offense. Johnson has spent more than 20 years in federal prison.
“Great meeting with @KimKardashian today, talked about prison reform and sentencing,” Trump tweeted after their meeting.
