Reid to Trump: ‘Put up or shut up’ on immigration test

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is launching a petition to pressure Donald Trump to prove that he can pass a test taken by immigrants after predicting the GOP presidential nominee would fail.

The petition — started on the Nevada Democrat’s campaign website — calls on Trump to “put up or shut up” and “prove” that he can pass a U.S. citizenship exam.

{mosads}”Immigrants already face vigorous testing before gaining citizenship. And before Donald Trump makes it even harder for these hardworking people to achieve their American Dream, he should prove he can pass the test himself,” Reid’s petition, which was launched Monday, says.

The move comes after Trump proposed new ideological tests last week for Muslim immigrants, a suggestion that has earned him fierce backlash from Democrats and some Republicans.

The senator, who plans to retire after this year, predicted last week that Trump would fail a naturalization test, calling him a “spoiled, unpatriotic drain on society who has earned nothing and helped no one.”

Reid and other top Democrats have repeatedly lashed out at the GOP nominee. They are hoping to link vulnerable Senate incumbents to Trump, who they hope will be a drag on down-ballot races.

Republicans are defending 24 Senate seats in November, including a handful in states previously carried by President Obama. Democrats need to net five seats — or four if they hold the presidency — to win back the Senate majority.
