Casey calls on FIFA to release corruption report
Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) demanded that FIFA release a report on allegations of corruption in determining which cities host the World Cup.
{mosads}“I’m troubled by the lack of transparency coming from FIFA and their refusal to commit to making this report public,” Casey said Thursday. “The public deserves to know if these World Cups were awarded on the basis of bribery and corruption.”
Casey said the FIFA Ethics Committee has finished investigating the bidding processes of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in Russian, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, but that the soccer organization refused to make the findings public.
The United States lost its bid to host the World Cup Tournament in 2022 to Qatar.
“I urge FIFA to make public [the] entire investigative report and that any wrongdoing be swiftly addressed especially if there is evidence that the vote for the 2022 World Cup was tainted and disadvantaged the U.S. bid,” Casey wrote in a letter to FIFA President Joseph Blatter.
