Rubio to China: Violence against protesters will have consequences

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) called on the Obama administration to ensure China knows the United States stands with Hong Kong protesters.

“America should be on the side of those in the street peacefully protesting for their fundamental freedoms,” Rubio said on Monday. “I again call on the Obama administration to make clear to China that it must abide by its international commitments regarding Hong Kong’s status and allow direct elections of Hong Kong’s chief executive.”

{mosads}On Monday, the Obama administration urged Hong Kong authorities to “exercise restraint” amid pro-democracy protests following Beijing’s decision to restrict reforms in the territory. But Rubio said more could be done to show U.S. support for Hong Kong’s right to have a free and open election. Currently, China allows votes on only candidates approved by the Communist Party.

Rubio said Chinese security forces are using tear gas and intimidation against the peaceful protesters.

“We must make clear that any violence against peaceful protesters will have significant consequences for U.S.-China relations,” Rubio said. “America absolutely takes sides when confronted with right and wrong.”

Rubio is considered a potential GOP presidential nominee in 2016.
