Sen. King takes ice bucket challenge

Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) was the latest senator to accept the icy challenge for charity on Monday.

King poured a bucket of ice water over his head as part of the ice bucket challenge, which raises money and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal neurodegenerative disease most commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

{mosads}Volunteers, such as King, take videos of themselves getting drenched in the icy bath or make a donation before passing the challenge onto others. King challenged three of his Senate freshmen colleagues.

“This is dedicated to my friend, Joe Mayo, whom ALS took from us some years ago and my friend from high school football, Craig Munro, who is struggling with ALS right now,” King said. “And the challenge is to three of my Senate freshman colleagues: Tim Kaine of Virginia, Jeff Flake of Arizona, and Ted Cruz of Texas.”

Several lawmakers have taken part in the challenge this month, including Sens. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska).
