Coats: Missing IRS emails ‘defies incredulity’

Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.) on Monday said the Internal Revenue Service’s assertion that it had lost two years’ worth of Lois Lerner’s emails was difficult to believe.

“It defies incredulity,” Coats said on the Senate floor. “It would be laughable if it wasn’t so serious.”

{mosads}Coats said it seemed unlikely that there was no way of recovering any of the missing emails.

“Even though we live in a day and age where nothing virtually nothing ever disappears from the internet, the IRS wants us to believe these emails are lost for good,” Coats said.

Coats demanded the IRS give a more thorough explanation of how it lost the emails, as well as Lerner’s role in the agency’s scrutiny of conservative nonprofits applying for tax-exempt status.

“The IRS owes every American taxpayer an apology,” Coats said. “But an apology is not enough. We need answers.”
