Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) called on the Supreme Court Tuesday to make sure healthcare benefits, such as birth control, under ObamaCare aren’t taken away from women.
“What is at stake before the Supreme Court is whether a CEO’s beliefs can trump a woman’s right to healthcare,” Murray said on the Senate floor. “Women working for private companies should have access to quality medical care no matter who signs their paychecks.”
{mosads}The Supreme Court is expected to start hearing oral arguments later this month in a case about contraceptive coverage and religious liberty.
Under the Affordable Care Act, also known as ObamaCare, most employers are required to provide insurance coverage for birth control and other reproductive health services without co-pay. But Hobby Lobby, a craft store chain owned by conservative Christians, has argued that provisions violates their religious freedoms under the Constitution.
Murray said thanks to ObamaCare women now have more affordable preventive care, including birth control, and that some conservatives are trying to stop that provision from taking place.
“Women finally have access to affordable birth control,” Murray said. “This is about contraception.”
Although Supreme Court oral arguments start in March, the court’s final ruling isn’t expected until June.
