Wednesday: Opioid votes

The Senate will take a series of procedural votes on a bipartisan opioid abuse bill Wednesday.

Senators are expected to vote at noon to formally adopt a key amendment, as well as end debate on the overall bill. They’ll also vote on an amendment from Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) related to services for individuals who have received overdose reversal drugs.

{mosads}The legislation is on a glide path to pass the Senate this week after it overwhelmingly overcame an initial procedural hurdle Monday.

Senators had suggested the legislation could clear the Senate Wednesday. A final vote on the legislation has not been scheduled yet, and if lawmakers run out the procedural clock could kick the opioid bill into Thursday.

The legislation, from Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), authorizes funding for programs to combat prescription opioid abuse in addition to increasing the availability of naloxone, a drug to treat overdose.

The House is not in session Wednesday.
