Tuesday: Opioid debate
The Senate will continue debating a bipartisan opioid bill Tuesday as it heads toward final passage this week.
The debate comes after the Senate voted overwhelmingly to advance a substitute to the heroin and prescription drug abuse bill on Monday evening.
{mosads}While no votes are currently scheduled, senators could still take additional votes on amendments to the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act or CARA.
Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) suggested on Monday evening senators — led by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) — were continuing to negotiate on a wide-ranging package of amendments.
The legislation, from Portman and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), authorizes funding for programs to combat prescription opioid abuse in addition to increasing the availability of naloxone, a drug to treat overdose.
Portman added that a vote on final passage of the legislation isn’t expected until Wednesday.
Senators will also recess from 12:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. for weekly policy lunches.
The House isn’t in session.
