Wednesday: FDA commissioner
The Senate will take a final vote Wednesday on President Obama’s nominee to lead the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The vote on Robert Califf’s nomination to be the next FDA commissioner comes after senators overwhelmingly agreed to end debate on the nomination Monday in a 80-6 procedural vote.
{mosads}While Califf has gotten broad support, he’s also received pushback from a handful of bipartisan senators over concerns about his ties to the pharmaceutical industry and the FDA’s plan to combat an opioid epidemic.
A vote on the nomination is expected around 11 a.m.
The House will also vote on a handful of proposals under suspension of the rules, including a Senate-passed bill to allow federal prison workers to carry pepper spray.
Votes in the House are expected between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
