Monday: nomination, cyber
Lawmakers will return to Washington after a week-long recess on Monday, with the Senate scheduled to vote on Gayle Smith’s nomination to be the administrator for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Senators are expected to convene at 3 p.m. for leader remarks and morning business. A vote on Smith’s nomination is expected at 5:30 p.m.
Democrats have knocked Republicans for months for not bringing Smith’s nomination up for a vote, suggesting that not having a confirmed USAID chief has negatively affected the administration’s ability to confront the Syrian humanitarian crisis.
Meanwhile, House lawmakers will take up a handful of proposals under suspension of the rules, including creating an institute for teaching law enforcement, prosecutors and judges about cyber threats.
Votes in the House are expected at 6:30 p.m.
