Tuesday: Defense policy bill

The Senate is expected to finish its work on an annual defense policy bill on Tuesday.

Senators are expected to take a vote on final passage of the $607-billion National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) on Tuesday morning, after the bill overwhelmingly passed the House last week.

{mosads}The move will pave the way for the legislation — which includes restrictions on transferring detainees out of Guantanamo Bay — to be sent to President Obama’s desk.

The president vetoed the original NDAA largely over concerns about an extra $38 billion in war funding, as Democrats pushed for a long-term budget agreement.

Senators are also hoping to complete their work on the fiscal year 2016 spending bill for veterans’ benefits and military construction ahead of Veterans Day on Wednesday.

Lawmakers passed two amendments — one from Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and another from Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) — on Monday. No votes on the spending bill are currently scheduled.

Senators will also recess from 12:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. for weekly policy lunches.

The House is not in session.
