Tuesday: Highways, EPA water reg
The House will start work on a long-term highway bill Tuesday, with Democrats pushing their colleagues to reject efforts to hamper reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank.
The bill will offer an early test for House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) as he tries to move the legislation, which is the first long-term bill in a decade, through the lower chamber.
{mosads}The Senate has already passed its highway legislation, with top Republicans expressing optimism that they would quickly be able to reconcile the two bills after the House completes its work this week.
Meanwhile, the Senate will turn to a fight over President Obama’s water regulations.
Senators are expected to take a procedural vote on Tuesday afternoon over whether to end debate on taking up legislation from Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) The proposal would require the administration to try again on crafting regulations to define the federal government’s oversight of streams, wetlands and other waterways.
The Environmental Protection Agency’s Waters of the United States rule has gotten pushback from Republicans and some Democrats, who suggest the agency is overreaching.
Barrasso will need 60 votes to overcome Tuesday’s procedural hurdle.
