Monday: Sanctuary cities debate
Senators will debate taking up a bill to crackdown on so-called sanctuary cities on Monday.
The legislation, from Sen. David Vitter (R-La.), would limit federal funding for cities that don’t comply with federal immigration law and increase penalties for undocumented immigrants who reenter the country after being deported.
{mosads}Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) scheduled a procedural vote on taking up the bill on Tuesday. He’ll need 60 votes to overcome the hurdle. If every Republican backs the bill that would still require six Democrats to support moving forward with the legislation.
The Senate will convene at 4 p.m. on Monday. No votes are expected and the House is not in session.
