Thursday: ‘Sanctuary cities,’ highways
The House will take up legislation on “sanctuary cities” Thursday, in the wake of a San Francisco shooting that launched a political firestorm.
The House is expected to take up a proposal from Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) that would restrict federal funds for states or local governments that do not comply with federal immigration laws.
{mosads}The push for legislation comes after 32-year-old Kathryn Steinle was shot and killed along the San Francisco waterfront, allegedly by an illegal immigrant with a long criminal history.
House lawmakers are also expected to take up legislation on the labeling of food produced with genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
First votes in the House are expected between 12:45 p.m. and 1:45 p.m., with final votes between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Senate will continue its work on a long-term highway bill, after senators overcame a first procedural hurdle late Wednesday night.
No votes are currently scheduled in the Senate.
