Thursday: Trade, NDAA
The House will take another swing at passing a fast track trade bill after House Democrats stalled the measure last week.
The House will vote Thursday on a trade promotion authority (TPA) legislation without also trying to pass Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA), a program aimed at helping people who lose work because of trade deals.
{mosads}Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said in a joint statement on Wednesday afternoon that they were committed to making sure both bills reach President Obama’s desk.
The House is also expected to finish work on a slate of healthcare reform bills that lawmakers took up on Wednesday.
First votes in the House are expected between 10 and 11 a.m.
Meanwhile, the Senate is expected to finish work on the National Defense Authorization Act.
Senate Republicans suggested that a final vote on the annual defense policy bill would come Thursday, before the Senate moves on to a defense spending bill. Democrats have pledged to block the defense spending bill to try to push Republicans to make a deal on lifting budget caps.
A time for the final vote on the policy bill hasn’t been announced.
