Dem marks 100th anniversary of ‘Christmas truce’

Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.) has introduced a resolution commemorating the 100th anniversary of the World War I Christmas truce.

British and German soldiers on the Western front in 1914 agreed to pause the fighting and celebrate Christmas. The cease-fire allowed soldiers to tend to their dead and wounded, as well as sing holiday carols and partake in festivities.

{mosads}Crowley said he has a “more personal connection” to the Christmas truce because his great-grandfather was one of the soldiers stationed there.

“I have always been so proud to know that he participated in such a meaningful moment in history,” Crowley said of his great-grandfather. “The Christmas Truce has always inspired me as a reminder that it is possible for opponents to look beyond their differences and see each other as people.”

Crowley’s symbolic resolution, H. Res. 781, was not taken up before Congress adjourned for the year.
