Congressional Black Caucus blasts GOP lawsuit

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus took to the House floor Monday night to slam the House GOP lawsuit against President Obama.

Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) said the lawsuit was really a means to accommodate the most conservative members of the House GOP who have called for Obama’s impeachment.

{mosads}”This lawsuit is nothing more than a political ploy designed for those who really want impeachment without cause,” Lee said. 

Lee argued the lawsuit demonstrated the GOP’s fundamental disrespect of President Obama.

“This lawsuit is another example of the unfounded and wasteful and really unconscionable attacks on our president who was twice elected by the American people,” Lee said.

At the heart of the House GOP lawsuit is Obama’s use of executive action to delay the mandate in the 2010 healthcare law requiring employers with 50 or more workers to provide insurance coverage. The House is expected to vote on a resolution authorizing the lawsuit later this week.

Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) said the House GOP’s case wouldn’t stand up in court and was a waste of taxpayer money.

“This doesn’t pass a constitutional test. It doesn’t pass a legal test. It doesn’t even pass the laugh test,” Moore said.

“While it may not have any standing, it certainly will cost hundreds of millions of dollars before the ruling will be made,” Moore added.

Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio) accused the GOP leadership of ignoring pertinent issues.

“The American people deserve so much more than the Republican leadership has given them,” Fudge said.
