Radel says alcohol never interfered with work

Rep. Trey Radel (R-Fla.) said on Sunday that he would return to work in Congress after being rehabilitated for substance abuse and that his abuse of alcohol never interfered with his congressional work.

“To be clear, alcohol is the problem for me,” Radel wrote in a Facebook post Sunday. “It was selfishly fun but became an issue when it led to poor choices and missed opportunities.

{mosads}”It never interfered with my congressional obligations. However, it led me down a path that chipped away at my relationship with my wife, my child and God. It also led to bad decisions.”

In October, Radel bought cocaine from an undercover police officer in Washington, D.C. In November, he pleaded guilty to cocaine possession and was sentenced to a year of probation.

While members of both parties have called on Radel to resign his seat, Radel reiterated on Facebook that he will try to stay in Congress.

“Moving forward, my passion remains undaunted,” he wrote. “My priorities are clear. I stand ready to serve you in the House of Representatives. I don’t care if you’re a Democrat, a Republican or not involved in politics at all. I am here to serve our entire community.”

He also apologized again for his actions and thanked constituents for their support.

“While I am thankful, I am still remorseful. I let you down. For that, I am profoundly sorry.

“I will return to Washington to work for you and continue to do what’s right for our country. In the spirit of Christmas, thank you for this gift to serve you.”
