Ball in Congress’ Court to Restore Confidence in Professional Sports (Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton)

I commend Roger Clemens and Brian McNamee for having the guts to come forward under oath. I feel though, that the answers thus far have failed to convince me that Clemens has never used steroids or HDH, but McNamee has much to lose by dreaming up falsities as well.

I believe these hearings we have had over Major League Baseball has to shadow over every American sport and that baseball itself, should no longer be singled out. I also believe that the only effective remedy that would restore confidence in professional sports is a legislative requirement that they all test using an independent entity as in the Olympics. I do not think baseball will do that without legislative action because that is a matter that would have to be collectively bargained, and I think that makes it difficult for management to do it and difficult for labor to agree to it.

The ball is therefore in our court to make that happen and restore confidence in not just baseball but in professional sports in America.
