Roland Burris As The New U.S. Senator from Illinois (Rep. Bobby Rush)
I am profoundly delighted that today, the great State of Illinois can once again be fully represented in the United States Senate. It’s fitting that on this day, the 80th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the rule of law was fairly executed and a brilliant, decent man and long-time public servant took his rightful seat in the Senate.
“I am proud to have played a leading role in helping my friend, Senator Burris, be sworn in as the new U. S. Senator from the great state of Illinois. The effort that was put forth en route to today’s historic moment was made possible through the determined effort of Senator Burris, his capable legal team, loving family and hundreds of civic, religious and hardworking people from my Chicago community, our state and the nation.
“I applaud the wisdom of Majority Leader Harry Reid and Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin for acknowledging the lawful nature of Senator Burris’ appointment. I am confident that Senator Burris’ 30 years of experience has prepared him for the tremendous challenges facing our nation. I look forward to working with both Senators Burris and Durbin to address the tough economic and social challenges that plague our nation.
