Job Fair Designed to Level Playing Field for D.C. Residents (Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton)

I am pleased to make available almost 100 employers for my constituents hunting for jobs at my 10th Annual Job Fair at the Washington Convention Center Hall C on Tuesday, July 10, from 11 AM to 4 PM. At our D.C. residents-only job fair, job seekers will have a first crack at jobs in the city and region before being overwhelmed by the much larger numbers of job applicants from the region, who already get most of the openings here.

Residents tell me they have benefited from the one-stop shopping for opportunities at my fair, instead of trekking all over the region to find work. From 9:30 to 11:00 AM, the job fair also will feature an interactive workshop on preparing a resume, boosting interviewing skills, and dressing for success. The job fair draws thousands of job seekers and because of the event’s popularity, participants must bring ID or other proof of D.C. residency to get in.

Employers will be recruiting for a wide range of jobs at every level. Here’s a sampling: private employers such as National Public Radio, Unity Health Care, and 1st Choice Staffing; federal agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security, the Small Business Administration, and the State Department; local government agencies such as D.C. Metropolitan Police, Parks and Recreation, and D.C. Courts; and medical entities such as CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, CVS Pharmacy, and Prince George’s County Emergency Medical Services.

Good news that D.C. unemployment is slightly down. However, the rate is still double the region’s unemployment and new jobs that have come to the District in recent months are still disproportionately going to Maryland and Virginia residents. I hope that my job fair Tuesday will help level the playing field. Go to my website for more details.
