The case of the ‘Jena 6’ unfortunately demonstrates the enduring character of racial tension in this country. America’s judicial system is intended to provide impartial judgment in resolving disputes. Yet, when Mychal Bell was tried as an adult for attempted murder after his alleged transgressions and those of some of his peers against another student at his school, the charges brought against him were exorbitantly more severe than those of his white peers engaged in similar activities. This is completely unacceptable. I am moved by today’s national mobilization to bring awareness to the issue.
