We Must Apply Greater Pressure on Burmese Junta (Rep. Don Manzullo)

I continue to be concerned about the human rights abuses in Burma following the junta’s violent crackdown; I am following the situation closely. Reports that the junta has arrested hundreds, if not thousands, of innocent people are very troubling. So, I welcome recent Japanese and the European Union actions to applying greater pressure on the junta. Even the United Nations Security Council voiced its anger at the massacre. While I praise Japan and the EU, I also believe more needs to be done by Burma’s neighbors to pressure the regime. The Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, and Global Environment is scheduled to hold an important hearing on Burma today. I look forward to working with the Chairman to ensure that we don’t forget the plight of the Burmese people.
