American People in Need of Economic Rescue

As the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is debated in the Senate this week it is crucial that Congress considers the real world effects their actions will have on hard working Americans and our economy.

All across America families are losing their jobs, their health care, their homes and their pensions. Their situation is dire and they cannot afford to wait while people obstruct in Washington.

There is no such thing as a Democratic job or a Republican job; people just want to get back to work.Americans desperately need an economic recovery plan that directly and quickly stimulates the economy –not a continuation of the failed policies of the past that simply gave tax cuts to millionaires.

This past election offered voters a clear choice.

President Obama strongly advocated for an agenda that would immediately help working families, creating jobs with direct spending to repair our crumbling infrastructure, producing green jobs while addressing climate change, and providing universal healthcare.

John McCain advocated more of the Bush policies — tax cuts and more tax cuts. Tax cuts that only helped income earners at the very top. Tax cuts that favor corporate America while they bought private jets and paid their CEO’s obscene salaries and bonuses.

Faced with two very distinct visions for America voters overwhelmingly chose Obama and a new direction that would help working people, create jobs, and rebuild the middle class.

It is time for those who are attempting to obstruct this agenda to stop and think about the families and communities that cannot wait any longer. We call on Congress to join President Obama in moving economic recovery for the middle class now.
