GOP Rep. Miller: Obama now responsible to ensure survival of GM and Chrysler

The Obama administration and the Auto Task Force are now responsible for the survival of not only General Motors and Chrysler, but of American manufacturing at large, a suburban Detroit lawmaker asserted Monday.

“The President and the Auto Task Force have now determined that they know better how to run these complex manufacturing organizations and are going to force changes,” Rep. Candice Miller (R-Mich.) said in a statement following President Obama’s speech on assisting the troubled automakers. “By implementing these changes they now become accountable for achieving success.”

The strongly-worded statement seeks to lay responsibility for the companies’ health, as well as its broad effects on the economy and culture of Detroit, at the feet of the administration.

Miller said that Obama is now “accountable for the jobs, accountable for the livelihoods of the families which are at stake and accountable for the survival of American manufacturing

“Throughout the painful restructuring we have been undergoing, the people of metro Detroit and the workers in our domestic auto industry have done what they have always done, roll up their sleeves, put their heads down and go to work,” Miller added. “We now have to do that again only with an even greater sense of urgency.”
