Poll: Majority disapproves of Chrysler, GM loans

A majority of Americans disapproves of former President George W. Bush’s decision to loan $17.4 billion to the auto industry last year, according to a new poll.

The USA Today/Gallup survey, released Tuesday, found that nearly six in 10 respondents disapprove of the loans. Nearly four in 10 approve.

The poll comes as President Obama rejected the auto companies restructuring plans this week and called for more extensive changes.

If read to mean that most Americans don’t support an auto bailout, the poll appears to support Obama’s decision. Interestingly, though, Democrats were among the only group that did support the loans.
