President Bush may end up with the legacy of Great Depression-era President Herbert Hoover if he allows troubled U.S. automakers to fail, one Ohio Republican Senator warned Friday.
“I wouldn’t wait at all, because the longer you wait, the worse it gets,” Sen. George Voinovich (R-Ohio) said during an appearance on CNN Friday. “One thing I’d sure not want to have on my record is, ‘I’m known as George Herbert Hoover Bush.'”
Voinovich has been a vocal proponent of the bailout, putting him in the squarely in the minority of his party, which largely voted against a bailout in last night’s procedural motion in the Senate.
“I cannot believe this president wants to have the last act of his legacy in his presidency to see icons like General Motors going to bankruptcy and liquidation,” Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) chimed in.
